Growing Guide
Soil & Location: Plant in well-draining, fertile soil with a pH of 5.5–7.0. Full sun preferred — minimum 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Winged beans fix atmospheric nitrogen, so they improve soil quality as they grow.
Sowing: Soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before planting to improve germination rate. Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep, 15–20 cm apart in rows 45–60 cm apart. Direct sowing is recommended — winged beans do not transplant well due to their sensitive root system.
Support: Provide a trellis, fence, or stake from the start — the vine climbs vigorously and will produce more pods when trained upward.
Watering: Water regularly but avoid waterlogging. Reduce watering once the plant is established. Drought-tolerant once mature.
Fertilizing: Minimal fertilizer needed — as a nitrogen-fixing legume, the plant enriches its own soil. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers which promote leaf growth at the expense of pod production.
Harvesting: Harvest young pods at 10–15 cm for best tenderness (similar to French beans). Allow pods to mature fully on the vine for seed saving or dry bean use. The plant produces continuously — regular harvesting encourages more pod production.
