Binnen zaaien
Tomaten zijn gemakkelijk te kweken uit zaad dat binnen in warme omstandigheden is gezaaid. Zaai van eind februari tot half maart als je je gewas in een kas gaat kweken, of van eind maart tot begin april als ze buiten staan.
Vul een kleine pot met zaadcompost, geef goed water en zaai vervolgens drie of vier zaden op het oppervlak. Bedek met vermiculiet en bewaar bij ongeveer 18°C (64°F), idealiter in een verwarmde kweekbak, of dek af met een doorzichtige plastic zak en plaats op een warme vensterbank. Zodra zaailingen verschijnen - meestal binnen veertien dagen - onthul en plaats in zoveel mogelijk licht, om te voorkomen dat ze dun en langbenig worden.
Oppotten
Verplaats de zaailingen na een paar weken in individuele potten:
- Vul kleine potten met multifunctionele compost en water goed, maak dan een gat in het midden van elk met een dobber of stompe stok.
- Til elke zaailing afzonderlijk op, gebruik de dobber om de kluit te ondersteunen en houd hem vast aan een blad in plaats van aan de delicate stengel, en laat hem vervolgens in het nieuwe gat zakken. Als de zaailing langbenig is, begraaf hem dan tot het eerste paar bladeren en zet hem voorzichtig vast.
Zet de planten in een kas of op een goed verlichte vensterbank, waar de temperatuur altijd minimaal 16°C is, en geef regelmatig water. Na ongeveer een maand moeten ze klaar zijn om op hun definitieve positie te planten, zodra de eerste bloemen opengaan.
