Description
Verwijder onkruid als de planten jong zijn en mulch dan zwaar - 4 tot 8 inch - om meer onkruid te voorkomen. Kleed de planten aan met 10-10-10, oude mest of rijke compost (1/2 pond per 25 voet rij). U kunt ook maandelijks een uitgebalanceerde vloeibare meststof toepassen. Vermijd te veel stikstof, dit ontmoedigt de bloei en stimuleert de bladgroei. Wanneer de zaailingen ongeveer 3 centimeter lang zijn, verdun je de planten zodat ze 18 tot 24 centimeter uit elkaar staan.
Houd de planten de hele zomermaanden goed water. Een centimeter water per week is ideaal, maar gebruik meer als je in een hete, droge regio bent. Hoge hitte kan de groei van okra vertragen.
Snoei de toppen van okra-planten wanneer ze 5 tot 6 voet lang worden. Dit zal resulteren in meer zijtakken. Snoei die indien nodig.
In warme streken snijden sommige telers planten tot ongeveer 2 voet wanneer de productiviteit in de zomer vertraagt. De planten groeien terug en produceren een nieuwe oogst van okra.
